Bridge game info

Players

Bridge is played with four players divided into two teams. Teammates sit across of each other (north and south play together, east and west play together).

Cards

The game uses a standard deck of 52 playing cards.

The rank of the cards is simple, with the Ace being ranked the highest and 2 the lowest. All trump cards will outrank the cards of the other suits.

Deal

Each player is dealt 13 cards, one card at a time, in clockwise direction.

Objective

The goal in bridge is to be the team with the highest amount of points at the end of the match. A match is also called a rubber. A match ends when a team has won two games.

A game is won by getting a contract score of 100 or more (potentially over several deals).

Bidding

The player left of the dealer can start with the bidding (or pass).

A bid made by a player is an announcement of the number of tricks above 6 tricks that the player’s team will win, and which suit will become trump. For example, if a player bids ‘1 Hearts’, this means their team should win 7 (6+1) tricks with Hearts as trump suit.

Any subsequent bid has to be higher:- By bidding for the same number of tricks but in a higher suit- By bidding for a higher number of tricks in any suit

Suits are ranked as follows from low to high: Clubs, Diamonds, Hearts, Spades, No Trump. No Trump means, as its name suggests, that there is no trump suit.

Players can also double (or redouble) the previous bid, resulting in higher points.

If a player passes at a certain point in the bidding process, he can still make a bid afterwards.

When there are three consecutive passes after a bid, the bidding process is stopped and the contract is won by the player that made the last bid (the declarer).

Gameplay

The player left of the player that won the bidding process (the declarer) leads the first trick.

After the first card is played, the team mate of the declarer has to lay down his cards on the table, open for everyone to see. This is called the dummy hand. The declarer will play in place of his team mate.

When playing cards to a trick, following suit is mandatory if it is possible.

The trick is won by the player with the highest ranking trump card if any is played, otherwise the player with the highest ranking card in the suit of the leading card wins the trick.

The player that wins a trick can start the next trick.

The game continues until each player has played their 13 cards.

Scoring

Contract points

If the declarer’s team makes the contract, they are awarded contract points.

Each trick above 6 tricks that a team wins is worth points. The amount of points depends on the trump suit:

• Diamonds or Clubs: 20 points for each trick
• Spades or Hearts: 30 points for each trick
• No Trump: 40 points for the first trick, 30 points for each additional trick

Contract points are double (or quadrupled) if the bid was doubled (or redoubled).

Overtrick points

Each trick above a team’s bid is worth additional points:

• Diamonds or Clubs: 20 points for each trick
• Spades, Hearts or No Trump: 30 points for each trick

Undertrick points

If the declarer’s team doesn’t make the contract, the defending team gets undertrick points for each trick below the contract.

Bonuses

• Small slam: Awarded when winning 12 tricks
• Grand slam: Awarded when winning 13 tricks
• Honor points: Awarded when starting with the highest 4 or 5 trumps (A, K, Q, J, 10)

Game end

A match ends when a team has won two games.
