    How was the new venue?

Easy to actually get in with multiple ticket barriers, so whilst an initial queue outside, it was a straight walk thru' inside - Many places to get a drink and barely a queue - Small M&S self service style food area to buy 'snack' - Clean - Maybe a bit of a walk in/out of town to get there, especially on a cold night - Was it to big, so you loose any atmosphere, then maybe but it wasn't seedy - Could take your drink in and each seat had a little drink 'caddy' on the arm chair - I walked in/out to the venue/town so can't comment on how long it would take for public transport - Think the tram was free - Plenty of staff outside to help you find way in, exit to walk pack path/road, direct you to trams/taxi etc - So no complaints

Was a touch worried buying a Grolsch as I could see 2 prices - £8 and £16 - And thought I hope that is not a 1/2 and a pint - It was a pint and 2 pints

@gassage - You were obviously closer than me - I was probably about 10 rows back from you and 10 runs in front of the pa and lighting desk

Joe played a PRS SE on 2/3 occasions inc Rocky Mountain Way - But for the voice box solo utilised a different PRS - I assume Deacon was playing his dad's guitars on a few occasions and what I assume was the black 'LP Special' - Vince had a nice LP Junior that he used on a few numbers - Wasn't close enough to see what the white '50's Strat that Joe played quite a bit

4th time I've seen them - Very professional and nailed every song - Interesting that Don sings far less now, even on songs that you'd have normally associated with him - Deacon tended to sing his dad's songs and Vince sang a few of Don's songs - Maybe you'd expect it with their ages, but Desperado at the end maybe showed us that Don has just lost something in that voice - Still full of emotion, but you feel he had to 'pull it back' a touch now - Rod Stewart does the same so no shame

I kind of found the Doobie Bros more exciting than the Eagles - Thinking about it, was it because I've now seen the Eagles 4 times so in a way you knew what to expect and they delivered what you expected - Never seen the Doobie's before but always been a fan - So a night of the best of the West Coast (albeit on a cold/damp Manchester night) was potential a great night out

The Doobie's did around a one hour set of effectively the best hits - Pat, Tom and Michael Mc were excellent but big praise for the Sax Player - Excellent

Just found it more exciting watching the Doobie Bros - You forget how big they were as a studio, chart and live act in the 70's - Michael Mc still has that voice

Tom played one PRS or another all night - Pat had what looked like a converted/hot rodded 70's Strat with a locking trem and a purple highly figured 'drop top' Supa Strat but could not quite see what it was

    Overall a great night

see above and 2nd pic down - That LP that Vince is playing - Original or re-issue - Looks to clean from pics enhanced with lighting to be original

Think Joe played 'more modern guitars' all night - Can't think of any song when he brought out an old piece

Then that 'old looking' early 60's Strat that Steuart is playing (again see pic above) - he played it a few numbers - Original or CS and either way 'changed pick-ups - Any info on your part - Interesting he used a M Man Axis on a few numbers with changed hum buckers - I like the Axis S /Sport but IMO, its biggest negative is the p/ups so wonder what he uses, but certainly sounded good - And again I could not get a good view of it, the 335 he used on I can't tell you why

Pat Simmons, Vince Gill and Steuart Smith all played with a thumb pick, from what I could see all night - I know you could say, that coming from more of a 'country' back ground it would suit Vince and Steuart, from various country pickin' etc - But less so with Pat

I wonder if this thumb pick playing is also more of a regular feature amongst USA players, thanks to the Banjo and many more players/teachers coming from a blue grass banjo environment - Remember pre WW2 the banjo was a bigger/more popular instrument than the guitar - I certainly think was the case in the 50's when Chet and co arrived, plus you saw it with so many Rock a billy, Scotty Moore type of players, who become part of rock'n'roll

What I found interesting, purely from the big video screen, is that Steuart Smith had a really long thumb pick - I've tried a thumb pick a few times, but never stuck with it - Kind of liking having a weird growth on the end of my thumb - But when I've spoken to other players/customers about persevering with it, they all said get a short thumb pick, or file it down, so barely any of the actual pick sticks out, so it feels more like you are just using your thumb - That is opposite to what I saw Steuart doing last night - Could not tell, from the angle I was looking at, as to what Vince was using

Now that you've guys have seen it, I'll add some comments from when I saw them last year - I thought the Eagles themselves were super, well, really boring - yes, perfectly tight, superb harmonies etc, but a little too "laid back California" for me - UNTIL Joe Walsh kicked it up a few degrees. I'm not surprised the set was so heavy on his stuff - he was willing to do it, and it lifted the mood of the show like 400%. Really excellent.

Interestingly, when I saw the Eagles last - in 2003 I think - the set was very Henley-solo-material heavy. Glenn Frey did 'You Belong To The City' but I think Henley, in addition to Boys Of Summer, did Dirty Laundry, Sunset Grill, and All She Wants To Do Is Dance. I suppose the fact that he's really cut back on his vocals now two decades later is kind of why Joe got to take over since he was very happy to sing. And play like a monster.

Speaking of monster playing, how good is Steuart??? Jeez. He plays all the hard parts. Incredible sideman.

The Doobies were in my mind better than the Eagles from a pure entertainment perspective - mostly thanks to Michael McDonald. I didn't even get to see Tom, he was still out recovering from back surgery, but the rest of the band picked up his parts no problem. I still say Michael McDonald is a living legend though and I'm also sad that their cut-down set meant no Pretzel Logic, which apparently they are playing as the final song in their headline sets. I thought that would have made a nice tribute to the MIA Steely Don, but I also understand you need to cram the hits into an hour or a lot of boomers will go home £400 down and very sad.

Looks like a great night. Was this at the new Co-Op Live Arena in Manc? Trying to get myself to the Pearl Jam gig there in a few weeks if I can get my shifts sorted with work. How big is it and how far away would I be if was on the upper tier? Might chance going for some standing tickets if I'm basically gonna be needing binoculars if I'm up high on the back/sides somewhere!

I would not want to be in the upper tier - Certainly not if opposite the stage - Think you'll be to far away so effectively you'll be watching the big screens

I like the CoOp arena - I go to a few football matches and cricket + other indoor concert venues and the Co-op is better with regards to the facilities it offers and access to them

It is 22/24K and maybe not quite as big as a football stadium, but I bet it is not far away
