Learn About Groundhog Day:

Start by introducing your child to the concept of Groundhog Day. Explain that on this special day, a groundhog comes out of its burrow, and if it sees its shadow, it gets scared and goes back inside, predicting six more weeks of winter. If it doesn’t see its shadow, it stays out, suggesting an early spring. This whimsical tradition makes the holiday so unique and exciting!

Predicting the Weather:

In a playful and educational twist, let a child predict the weather for the next six weeks, just like Punxsutawney Phil, the famous groundhog. Have them draw a sun or a cloud on a calendar for each day to make their predictions. It’s a fun way to introduce basic concepts of weather and seasons.

Groundhog Day Craft and Other Kids Activities

Groundhog Craft:

Get creative with a Groundhog Day craft activity. Help your little one make their very own groundhog puppets using paper plates, construction paper, and googly eyes. They can decorate their groundhogs and practice popping them in and out of a cardboard burrow.

Shadow Play:

Since Groundhog Day is all about shadows, have some shadow-play fun. Use a flashlight to create shadows on the wall, and let your little ones experiment with making shapes and animal silhouettes. Talk about how shadows work and how the groundhog’s shadow prediction is part of the holiday’s magic.

Groundhog Day Storytime:

Read age-appropriate books about Groundhog Day to your child. There are plenty of children’s books that explain the holiday and its traditions in a fun and engaging way. Storytime can help them understand the significance of this quirky holiday.

People have been gathering in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to celebrate Groundhogs Day since the late 1800s. The famous groundhog who predicts the weather is Punxsutawney Phil. He
always gives his annual “forecast” on the top of a tiny hill in the town called Gobbler’s Knob. So today,Punxsutawney Phil, on this 2nd Day of February 2017, during the 131st Annual Trek of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, read in his prediction Scroll:

At Gobbler’s Knob on Groundhog Day

We celebrate a world-wide Holiday

It’s mighty cold weather, you’ve been braving

Is it more winter or is it spring that you’re craving?

Since you’ve been up all night and starting to tottle

I, Punxsutawney Phil, shall not dawdle

My faithful followers, I could clearly see

A beautiful, perfect shadow of me

Six more weeks of Winter, it shall be!

Groundhog Day Outdoor Exploration:

If the weather allows, take your little ones outdoors to see if they can spot their own shadows. Explain that this is similar to what the groundhog does on Groundhog Day. You can make it an adventure by exploring your backyard or a nearby park.
