Position overview

The Healthcare Access at School (HAAS) program is delivered in a partnership between Canberra Health Services and the Education Directorate.

The program supports students in ACT public schools with a range of health conditions who require complex or invasive tasks or procedures to be undertaken during school hours.

Under the HAAS Program, the Registered Nurse provides training for school-based staff to ensure they are competent and confident in meeting the healthcare needs of individual students, allowing these students to safely attend school.

The HAAS nurse also provides a link between families, schools, and the child’s health professionals.

Note:There are multiple temporary part time positions; Monday to Friday 0800-1630hrs. Required days are Thursday and Friday with other days negotiable.


There is the possibility of extension, increased hours and/or permanent appointment.


The office is based at 1 Moore Street Canberra City with travel to schools or to meet with families on most days.

Duties

Under limited direction of the HAAS CNC, you will help enable students with complex and invasive health care needs to attend school safely. You will:

  1. Work collaboratively with families/carers, other health service providers and school staff to develop individual care plans, using a child centred approach. The care plans will provide stepped out instructions for school staff to follow in order to enable the child to attend school safely
  2. Self-identify that health tasks identified are within your scope of practice as you will provide clinical insight to inform the decision process for level of care required within the school setting, in consultation with the HAAS Paediatrician
  3. Provide education and training to nominated school staff to deliver the health care tasks in the care plan. This includes close supervision ‘buddying’ while they develop the necessary skills and confidence in the task before competence is assessed
  4. Provide ongoing support to nominated school staff including:
    • Making changes to the care plan as needed (in consultation with families and in line with evidence-based practice);
    • Delivering refresher training and competency assessment.
    • Debriefing;
    • Liaison between the family, school staff and school leadership; and
    • Evaluation of the program at the school
  5. Ensure documentation in the child’s Clinical Record is maintained, and use ACTPAS to record occasions of service
  6. Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Position Requirements / Qualifications

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications and a minimum of 5 years’ experience working professionally in paediatrics is preferred.
  • Be registered or be eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
  • Hold a current driver’s licence
  • CHS is leading the drive to digitally transform health service delivery in Australia through the implementation of a territory wide Digital Health Record. Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates and contingencies.
  • Have an understanding of how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
  • Fulfil the responsibilities of this role as detailed in the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, Clinical Governance Framework, Partnering With Consumers Framework and all other related frameworks.

Please note prior to commencement successful candidates will be required to:

  • Undergo a pre-employment National Police Check.
  • Prior to commencing this role, a current registration issued under theWorking with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act 2011 is required.
  • Comply with Canberra Health Services Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination policy.

What you require (key selection criteria)

  1. Proven ability to apply an advanced level of paediatric nursing knowledge to:
    1. Complete an assessment of health care needs and, using a risk framework, develop an individualised care plan that allows the child to safely attend school
    2. Provide an expert nursing resource for school staff and families to ensure children have their health needs safely and appropriately met while at school
  2. Proven advanced level of verbal and written communication skills that can be applied to developing and maintaining key relationships with families, school staff, health professionals and other stakeholders
  3. Demonstrated skill in problem management and decision making in a child centred environment
  4. Proven understanding and application of Primary Health Care principles in delivery of high-quality health services to children and their families in a community setting
  5. Demonstrates understanding of, and adherence to, safety and quality standards, work, health, and safety (WH&S) and the positive patient experience. Displays behaviour consistent with CHS’s values of reliable, progressive, respectful, and kind.
