First of all marketing is not simple. To improve marketing skills you must know your product, your client, you must do a lot of market research and then plan strategies to connect with these people. They do not want to buy your product. They want to buy your manifesto, to connect with your brand, your ideas and values. That's what people look for nowadays. Of course you must try a lot, make mistakes, fix them, try again, read books, take courses. But most importantly, you have to put energy and effort into sending your message to your people, to connect with them. You might need some collaboration with artists or designers who could be able to help your vision come true.

I think this point is the most applicable. You can read about marketing or sales, sure. And you can retain knowledge and facts. But with hands-on practice, these skills will no longer be thought of as facts or knowledge. They will become second nature. Hands-on experience is often one of the best ways to learn.
