Woolworths Lunch Counter Ham Salad Recipe (2024)

Ingredients

  • 1 slice baked ham, 1 in. and diced * shopping list
  • 1/4 cup celery, finely diced shopping list
  • sweet pickle relish shopping list
  • salad dressing (not mayonnaise), as needed shopping list
  • salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste shopping list
  • 4 slices whole wheat bread, toasted shopping list
  • 2 lettuce leaves shopping list
  • potato chips shopping list

How to make it

  • * It is important to dice ham..DO NOT chop or grind it
  • Add celery, then add enough pickle relish and salad dressing to suit taste
  • Season to taste with salt and pepper
  • Mix well
  • Spread ham salad onto two of the toasted whole wheat bread
  • Top with lettuce
  • Place last toast slices on top
  • Cut each sandwich diagonally
  • Serve with chips.

    I remember our Woolworth's counter fondly too. It was a special treat to have a real soda fountain drink and a grilled cheese. Love the memory and the recipe.

    How cool. I have never had this at Woolworth's but my son's great grandma used to make this for us for lunch all the time. I never got her recipe, but this sounds like I remember. Will definitely be making - and of course you've got to have potato chips ! Thanks wynne.

    How funny.... I worked at Woolworths in the mid 60's... One of my first jobs.. Worked the counter and the CANDY counter.. with the roasting nuts! Yummmmy. I love this salad..
