The chicken thighs provide a juicy interior and a perfectly crispy exterior in this fried chicken recipe.

Coated in seasoned bread crumbs and egg whites, this dish boasts a satisfying crunch and a savory kick from salt and black pepper.

It’s a mouthwatering combination of tender, succulent chicken enveloped in a crispy, seasoned crust, making it the ultimate comfort food

You’ll need:

  • 4 chicken thighs with the bone-in & skin-on (approximately 2-2½ pounds)
  • 4 egg whites
  • 1 cup of plain bread crumbs
  • 1½ teaspoons of salt
  • ¾ teaspoon of black pepper

Substitutions And Additions

CHICKEN: If you prefer white meat chicken pieces to dark meat, we suggest you cut two boneless chicken breasts in half so that you have four equal-sized pieces.

This will allow them to fit into your air fryer better and will cook evenly.Your butcher can trim your chicken breast pieces for you if needed.

This recipe is written for bone-in, skin-on pieces of chicken because the chicken pieces stay nice and juicy.

You can use boneless skinless chicken; however, you will need to reduce your total cooking time.

Flip your chicken at the 6-minute mark, cook for an additional four to six minutes, and then test your chicken pieces from there to make sure they are cooked through.

BREADCRUMBS: This is a very simple breadcrumb coating recipe.

You can substitute seasoned breadcrumbs for the plain ones, or even a panko bread crumb would work just as well and taste delicious.

You could also try potato chips or cornflakes for even more crunch.

SPICE: Add a little bit of cayenne pepper or chili powder to your breadcrumb mixture for a kick. Or you can add a dash of hot sauce to your egg mixture.

How To Make This Air Fryer Fried Chicken Recipe

Let’s have a look at the easy step-by-step instructions for making this air fryer chicken recipe.

PRO TIP:

You can easily double this recipe to serve more people (or more pieces to each person).

You will need to allow for more time before serving as you will need to cook the additional chicken pieces in batches.

While you are cooking more pieces, you can keep the previously cooked pieces warm in a 200°F oven with the pieces on a baking tray fitted with a wire rack.

This will allow your chicken to stay warm and your coating to stay crunchy.

STEP ONE: Spray the inside of your air fryer basket with a small amount of cooking spray.

STEP TWO: Preheat your air fryer to 375°F according to your model’s instructions.

STEP THREE: Trim off any excess/overhanging skin from your chicken thighs, then place them onto a plate and pat them dry with paper towels.

REHEATING: When it’s time to reheat your fried chicken, you have a few options:

  • AIR FRYER: Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C), then reheat the chicken for about five to eight minutes until it’s hot and crispy again.

FAQs

Why is my fried chicken not crispy in the air fryer? ›

You didn't pat the chicken dry

You'll probably end up with soggy skin rather than the crispy golden crust you were looking for. Before putting chicken into the air fryer — or even seasoning your chicken — you should pat it completely dry with clean paper towels.

Can you put raw chicken in an air fryer? ›

Yes, you put raw frozen chicken in the air fryer! You won't be able to brine it first or pound it to an even thickness (so the results are not *as* juicy) but if you forget to thaw your chicken, it's a great option to have on hand.

Should I coat chicken in oil before air frying? ›

While I do recommend very lightly spraying the fried chicken with oil before and during air frying, you don't submerge the pieces entirely in oil, and as a result, they undoubtedly absorb less oil in the process.

Can you use batter in an air fryer? ›

Recipes that use a wet batter, including fried chicken, will end up being very messy if cooked in an air fryer. This is because there won't be enough hot oil to set the batter, and it will likely drip everywhere rather than forming a crunchy coating. The puddle of batter may also burn the base of your air fryer basket.

How do you crisp chicken in an air fryer? ›

If you happen to own an air fryer, you can certainly reheat your fried chicken in its basket. Preheat the air fryer to 375 degrees Fahrenheit and let the fried chicken come to room temperature. Next, arrange the fried chicken in a single layer and cook it for about four minutes, flipping it once to ensure even cooking.

Do you flip air-fried chicken? ›

Cook at 360° for 9 minutes. Then flip the chicken breast over and cook for another 9 minutes. Larger chicken breasts need more cook time, and smaller ones need less time. Open the air fryer immediately so it doesn't continue cooking in the heat.

Can you put aluminum foil in an air fryer? ›

Foil is safe to use in an air fryer so long as you follow three basic rules: never let foil touch the heating element; make sure the foil is weighted so it doesn't blow around the basket; and avoid contact with acidic ingredients, which can cause the foil to leach onto your food.

What cannot be fried in an air fryer? ›

Why is chicken rubbery in the air fryer? ›

Just follow the instructions and make sure you keep an eye in the temperature of the chicken in the final minutes. Since the Air Fryer works with convection heat, there is no need to cook chicken at very high temperatures, as it may quickly dry out and turn rubbery.

Is cornstarch or flour better for air frying? ›

An equal amount of all-purpose flour and cornstarch provides both structure and crunch to the batter. Cornstarch is a go-to ingredient for many fried foods (think crispy chicken wings), and using it to bolster the crisping power of flour resulted in a thinner, crispier, and sturdier (yet still delicate) breading.

What breading is good for an air fryer? ›

To make these air fryer breaded chicken breasts, you start with a classic dredge in flour and then you dip the chicken in a whisked egg to make sure the breading sticks. For the breading, I like to use Panko breadcrumbs. I think they provide the most texture.

Should you use flour in an air fryer? ›

Key Ingredients You Need

Buttermilk — Do not skip the buttermilk! It helps tenderizes the chicken so it'll melt in your mouth. Flour — All-purpose flour or bread flour is perfect for fried chicken as it gives the chicken a golden-brown coating after being air-fried.

Why is my air fryer not getting crispy? ›

Overcrowding your baskets or shelves blocks the convection movement of the heated air that the machines are designed to create, and you will end up with food that is cooked unevenly, not crispy all the way around, or will take much longer to cook than the recipes call for.

Why does my fried chicken come out not crispy? ›

If your oil temp is too high, your fried chicken will be scorched on the outside with meat that is undercooked. If the oil is too cool, your chicken will be greasy and will lack the golden-brown crispy exterior you want.

How do you crisp fried food in an air fryer? ›

Fried sides are easy

Any item that was once deep fried has oil imbued into the outer layer. There's no need to do anything to these special items. Spread the food out in the air fryer basket. Set the machine to 375°F on the “air fry” setting and let it rip for three to five minutes.

Why is my air fryer chicken so dry? ›

The #1 tip for the best chicken breasts in an air fryer is: Don't overcook them! Chicken breasts should be cooked to 160°F, but if you cook them all the way to that temperature in the air fryer, carryover cooking will take them beyond that temp and cause them to dry out.
