Job overview

In line with the Healthy Child Programme and the School Nursing Service Offer, we are looking for enthusiastic and motivated individuals to join our School Nursing Team to promote the health and wellbeing of Blackpool children, young people and their families.

Under the supervision of the School Nurse Specialist Practitioner you will develop and deliver plans to improve health outcomes and contribute to the wider public health agenda. You will be based with one of our 2 locality school nursing teams at one of the Primary Care Centres, and be allocated to work with children of both primary and secondary school age.

We are looking for Registered Children’s Nurses or Registered Nurses. The right candidate will have excellent communication skills, be organised and adaptable, and be able to demonstrate a proactive/innovative approach to engaging children and young people.

The post holder will be a member of the 4-19 public health team delivering a service for children, young people and their families. Supported by the SCPHN School Nurse, the post holder will participate in delivering a universal core service, and provide targeted interventions, to address health inequalities, where necessary referring to specialist services. This role will also include safeguarding responsibilities, mentorship of students and staff appraisals.

Whilst working as part of a supportive multidisciplinary team you will also have access to regular supervision, team meetings and training/CPD sessions along with a buddy system for the first 3 months in post to ensure you are well supported in the role.

It is essential to be a car owner or have the use of a car as you will be required to travel around the Blackpool area.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Undertake duties as allocated by the SCPHN School Nurse.
  • Build and develop good working relationships with named schools and the wider multi-disciplinary team.
  • Make contact with children, young people (CYP) and their families in a variety of community settings e.g. schools, home, children centres, youth clubs
  • Deliver planned programmes of health promotion to CYP either through one to one contact, group work or through delivery of school based PSHE lessons
  • Assist in the delivery of the Healthy Child Programme 5-19
  • In the absence of the SCPHN may undertake young people’s ‘Drop In’ clinic in secondary schools
  • Provide enuresis advice and continence assessments
  • Identify and support CYP through health needs assessments who have unmet health needs, provide support and targeted interventions and where necessary refer to specialist services
  • Take appropriate action in cases of suspected or actual child abuse, working within Blackpool’s safeguarding children’s code of practice and procedures.
  • In the absence of the SCPHN may attend child protection conferences/core groups as required and participate in 4x 4x4 supervision.
  • Undertake health needs assessments for children who are looked after
  • Assist in research and service audits
  • Supervise junior members of the 4-19 team as directed by the SCPHN SN undertake junior staff appraisals.
  • Participate in meetings as appropriate
  • Be prepared to be flexible within contracted hours
  • Following experience, be prepared to complete the Specialist Community Public Health (School Nursing) Post Graduate Degree.
  • Follow and engage in the School Nurse Practitioner Development programme and engage in reflective and self directed learning.
  • In accordance with the needs of the service, undertake other duties as required

  • RN/RSCN
  • Evidence of continuing professional development

EXPERIENCE

Essential criteria
  • Experience of multi-agency working, evidence of partnership working with others to respond to client needs
  • Awareness of the Public Health Agenda.
  • Awareness of Trust and Local Authority Safeguarding procedures and principles.
  • Knowledge of IT systems e.g. EMIS
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of the Healthy Child Programme, and healthy physical and emotional development of children and young people.
  • Previous experience of working with school aged children and their parents/carers
  • Previous experience of undertaking health assessments, screening, health education, wellbeing interventions and drop in services.
  • Knowledge of undertaking Level 1 Continence assessments
